Title
A great Sandhopper Blenny!
Origin: South Asia

Size info:
Size M: approx. 2.25 - 3.5"
Size L: approx. 3.5 - 4.75"

There once was a fish called Sandhopper,
Whose antics were really a showstopper,
With bulging eyes and sandy hue,
This blenny really knows how to woo.

It hops on sand like a kangaroo,
And mimics crabs like it's nothing new,
With sharp teeth and a suction cup,
It knows how to eat, without a hiccup.

Parapercis snyderi is quite unique,
And its behavior is far from meek,
It lives in warm waters, near the sand,
And is truly a sight to behold, grand.

Keeping Sandhopper Blenny (Parapercis snyderi) in an Aquarium

The Sandhopper Blenny, also known as Snyder's Blenny, is a fascinating fish that can be kept in a home aquarium. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Size: Sandhopper Blennies can grow up to 4 inches in length, so they need a tank that is at least 30 gallons.
  • Water parameters: They prefer a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4. They also need a moderate to high water flow in the tank.
  • Diet: Sandhopper Blennies are carnivorous and will eat a variety of small crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates. They can also be fed frozen or live foods.
  • Behavior: Sandhopper Blennies are active and curious fish that like to burrow in the sand. They may also jump out of the tank if they feel threatened, so a tight-fitting lid is necessary.

One of the coolest things about Sandhopper Blennies is their ability to change color. They have the ability to change from a light sandy color to a dark brown or black color in a matter of seconds. This is a defense mechanism that they use to blend in with their surroundings and avoid predators.

Another interesting aspect of their behavior is their relationship with pistol shrimp. Sandhopper Blennies will often pair up with pistol shrimp and share a burrow. The blenny will act as a lookout while the shrimp digs and maintains the burrow. This symbiotic relationship benefits both species and is fascinating to observe in the aquarium.
